It is ridiculous that in a city like Burnaby, that claims to respect it's hometown heroes, we could allow a whole venue to be abandoned. The mismanagement must stop. The city already spent 400k of tax payer money just to keep the doors open for another year, but perhaps the city should purchase the venue instead of subsidizing the school district? If they won't fully utilize it, then I see no reason why the MJF Theatre can't join the prestige of places like Shadbolt and become a true beacon for Burnaby arts.

Budgeting
Let's keep your money and date inside Canada. City staff have no use for forced AI adoption courtesy of Microsoft's Co-Pilot, but now it is on ALL staff computers simply hogging bandwidth. There are free, open source alternatives to Word & Excel (Libre Office) that could be used instead. Meanwhile Moneris has also been sold to American private equity, which means at any time they could decide to harvest all your payment information OR turn off debit payments, forcing Canadians to use solely American owned payment methods such as Visa, Mastercard, or AMEX. We must remove all Moneris terminals in the city.

Such as housing affordability, rental and non-market housing, transit performance, walking and cycling infrastructure, traffic safety, tree canopy, ecological restoration, climate resilience, homelessness, health-care advocacy and community-facility access.

Burnaby has carried the weight of recreation for the lower mainland for too long. Much like how New York's subway system is in disrepair since it never truly closes, Burnaby may have to consider shutting down certain facilities in rotation to make sure they're in full working order. Use closures as a way to make long overdue upgrades. We can barely manage the population as it is, and sorrowly need more recreation buildings. So let's make sure the ones we have are fully functioning.

I would even be willing to reject ALL future development proposals until the provincial gov't steps up. If it wants these insane population spikes, it better be funding the underlying infrastructure.

As councillor, I will reject any development proposal that lacks substantive amenities and diverse housing options. Burnaby's character is being eroded while contributing significantly to the BC housing crisis. We can do better! Fund the MJF Theatre!! More active civic involvement from council! No more hiding from residents!
Formerly a third-generation city employee, I am running as an independent focused on fixing our recreation centres, curbing condo overdevelopment, reducing traffic, improving transit, and keeping tax money in Burnaby. Especially by ending partnerships with American companies like Microsoft & Moneris.
This moment calls for a fighter, not more of the same old BCA folks. Someone unafraid to rock the boat, say outright what the shortcomings have been, and fix them.

Raison de la candidature
Recently this came up because the newly built Sports Box had it's rules changed overnight to remove certain activities in favor of adding more Pickleball time. But then it came out that the City of Burnaby staff member who had made this call was actually a member of the city's pickleball CLUB. And they get to decide that their chosen sport is more acceptable than anyone elses? Unacceptable. All city employees must undergo a conflict of interest screening (perhaps even annually) to prevent these sorts of biased opinions from becoming policy, as it is all too common at city hall.
Recreation managers have been giving excessive overtime to their friends on staff for years, costing the city immeasurably. Scrutiny is long overdue. The hands-off approach to Parks and Recreation must come to an end, and I'm happy to be the one to do it.
