I envision a government that works collaboratively to solve the problems that affect every Newfoundlander and Labradorian.
The polarizing positions of political parties are a hindrance to real progress. Many of the important issues to all voters are the same regardless of political party.
It is time to rise above partisanship and work together for the betterment of us all.
Platform
I am very aware of the social and economic state of Newfoundland and Labrador. I have studied and analyzed it as an Economist and Politician for the last 30 years.
I have not crafted a full platform as an Independent. However, I am taking a three-pronged approach to my campaign.
First, I want to bring the voices and concerns of my constituents directly to the House of Assembly, unfiltered by party politics. Many people have told me they do not see themselves reflected in party platforms. They feel pushed around by majority governments. My experience, knowledge and past successes will ensure my constituents' important issues are resoundling heard and addressed in the House of Assembly.
Second, I would like to work together with my constituents, other elected officials and levels of government, communities and businesses, to find smart solutions to complex problems that affect us all. I see myself as a facilitator for change and a moderate voice. Siloed and band aid solutions that have hobbled us from election cycle to election cycle should be a thing of the past. True solutions involve everyone working together to build a better place for generations.
Third, I want to work within the existing rules and guidelines to cause a change in government. Political parties have been using the laws to further their own agendas for too long. It is time to flip the script and put the power of government back into the hands of the people, where it belongs. Reforming our Elections Act is a good start to making that happen.
Biographie
.I am Alison Coffin and I am currently an Independent Candidate in two districts in the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Election. My name will be on the ballot for voters in Harbour Grace - Port de Grace and in Carbonear - Trinity - Bay de Verde.
I am also an Economist and Educator with more than 30 years of experience in our Province. I have taught economics, negotiated salary increases for underpaid employees, managed healthy pension plans and criticized unhealthy ones, walked picket lines and sat on Boards of Trade. I regularly read government documents and get excited when the Auditor General's report is released. I have provided economic advice to political parties, business communities, trade unions and associations. I am regularly called upon by the media to provide commentary on a range of socio-economic issues.
I was elected to the House of Assembly in 2019 as Leader of the NL New Democrats. I sat on House Management Committees, passed laws, and appointed Statutory officers. I lost my seat in the "chaotic" 2021 Provincial Election by a slim margin amid public uproar of how the election unfolded.
I then became the champion for a 2021 Supreme Court Challenge for people who did not get to vote. We won that case in June 2025, when Elections NL issued a formal apology and a Cabinet Minister resigned.
I have been published in many forums including an essay in the Democracy Cookbook called "Taking politics out of governance". It talks about how we can make government work better for people instead of politicians.
More personally, I have been living in Spaniard's Bay with the love of my life for several years. He lured me with a vegetable garden and a beautiful view. This is my home now. I feel a deep connection to the communities and people around me and a responsibility to use the depth of my experiences to benefit them.
Raison de la candidature
There are many reasons why I decided to run in the election.
Perhaps, most importantly, is because many of the people I care about asked me to run. They felt their best interests would be well represented with my voice in the House of Assembly. That spurred my decision to run.
They also asked for a choice on the ballot that wasn't tied to traditional political party lines. Hence, I chose to run as an Independent candidate.
Finally, I am running in two districts because I was invited to run in both and it is currently permissible within our badly outdated Elections Act. This bold move gives voters in both districts more choice - which is what democracy is all about. It will also force a proper review and modernization of our Elections Act which will benefit everyone in the province.
