Building New Schools

I will continue to pressure senior government to fund all capital costs. Smiling Creek Elem., in Burke Mountain is now open and land has been acquired for four more schools in that area. In addition seismic upgrades and replacements are being built throughout the district.

Cannabis Legalisation & Policy

We have policies in place for staff and cannabis is not allowed on or near school grounds. I will continue to lobby the City to keep the sale and production of cannabis well away from our schools.

Diversity

All students, have a right to feel safe and accepted at school. I support the Ministry of Education's intent to ensure that the diversity that exists in our community is reflected in existing classroom lessons.

Environment & Sustainability

All new schools are built to LEEDS gold standard which incorporates sustainability and environmentally friendly features.

Good Governance

In 2014 SD #43 was in $13.4 million in debt. Good governance is essential to the District. This debt has been paid off and we now maintain a surplus and have created a sound policy to use the additional money in coming years.

Mental Wellness

We have added a Mental Health Coordinator to staff however we need to do much more in this area and I will continue to press for additional staff to support our vulnerable students.

Natural Disaster Measures

We recently renewed efforts to be prepared in the event of a natural disaster and every school has a plan in place to deal with natural disasters. In addition we have an established location for a command centre for the school district.

Recycling

Standardized recycling bins have been placed in all 70 schools in the District to teach recycling and coordinate recycling which also saves money for the District.

Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Curriculum and Supports

I support The Ministry of Education’s intent to ensure that the diversity that already exists in our communities is reflected in existing classroom lessons in order to help make learning environments safer for all students.
