With over a decade of experience as a News Anchor, Assignment Editor, and Talk Show Host, Hon Chan is a well-known figure in the Chinese community across Canada. Throughout his 15-year career, Hon has been committed to understanding and addressing issues in Richmond, across the province, and nationwide. He has consistently held the government accountable, challenged leaders at all three levels of government, and brought controversial policies to public attention. Now, instead of questioning the government from the newsroom, Hon is stepping forward to represent the voices of Richmondites in Victoria.

Personal Life

Having spent most of his life in Richmond, Hon is deeply rooted in the community. He attended elementary and secondary school in the city, excelling both academically and as a leader. As the captain of his high school tennis team, Hon led the team to provincial tournaments for five consecutive years and earned the Most Valuable Player title each year.

Professional Career

After graduating from the University of British Columbia, Hon continued his career in the news industry as a News Anchor, News Editor, and Talk Show Host at Fairchild Television, the largest national Chinese television network in Canada. With over 15 years of experience as a professional journalist, Hon has tackled issues such as drug addiction, homelessness, the economy, affordability, health, infrastructure expansion, immigration, and cultural exchange. He understands the challenges grassroots citizens face and knows how to address them effectively.

Service to Community

Hon's commitment to Richmond extends beyond his professional career. He has volunteered with Richmond Hospital, playing a key role in translating the volunteer introductory handbook into Chinese, making it more accessible to new immigrants and the broader community. Additionally, he has served on various advisory committees for the City of Richmond, contributing his extensive knowledge and thoughtful insights to better the community. Having lived in his Richmond-Centre riding for several years, Hon has also served as a member of his building’s strata council, further deepening his involvement in local matters.

"Under seven years of the current BC NDP government, young adults are leaving our city and province, government spending has skyrocketed, and debt is at a historic high. BC’s credit rating has been downgraded, and most troubling, the NDP government does not listen to its citizens. This year alone, the supervised consumption site and the Cambie permanent supportive housing issues have torn the community apart, with consultations never thoroughly sought."
