Norman moved to the Greater Vancouver region in 1979 after completing his Doctorate in Mathematics at Cornell University. He worked for 9 years teaching and doing research at the University of British Columbia and Purdue University. After being bitten by the computer bug, Norman then completed a Masters of Computer Science at UBC, and spent 21 years in industry at MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates here in Richmond, retiring from that position in 2013.

For the civic term 2011-14, Norman was elected, and served as a trustee on the Richmond Board of Education. Norman believes in providing all students what they need to achieve their full potential, in a safe, caring environment for both staff and students. A clear communication must be maintained with parents and all levels of government, in the context of accountable governance.

Norman has also served on other boards in Richmond: Richmond Jewish Day School, The Sharing Farm, and is currently vice president of Richmond Food Security Society. Norman believes in a healthy, strong community working together.

In 1994, Norman and his wife, Rivian, moved to Richmond. Soon thereafter, their son, Ethan, was born, and is now working as an electrical engineer. Education and an open mind have always been important to Norman, who feels that issue, should be resolved through meaningful dialog, presenting one’s opinions and arguments, and understanding others’ opinions and arguments. Issues are rarely black and white, and usually involve compromise in order to make decisions and move forward.

Norman has a passion for food, and is compiling a cookbook for recipes that have no added sugar and no refined grains. His family have come to prefer this healthier style of cooking. Mathematics retains its attraction for Norman, who, from time to time, works on related problems. Other interests include community service, cooking, taking walks and playing guitar.
