David is an economist and expert in Northern Ontario’s development, has shaped Sudbury’s economy through research and advocacy. A dedicated educator and author, he champions sustainable growth and climate-focused policy to secure a better future.

David is an economist and Northern Ontario’s leading expert on Northern Ontario’s economic development. He has made important contributions to the Sudbury economy. He initiated and helped build Canada’s newest school of architecture and played and his research important role in identifying and developing the Mining supply sector in Northern Ontario. He is also the author two books, numerous book chapters on Northern Ontario Development and a handful of published poems. He is a father of three and grandfather of two, married for 44 years.

David was a member of the founding board of social-action-oriented Gallery 6500 located in the local Steelworkers Hall, served on the Senate of Laurentian University and as Director of the Institute for Northern Ontario Development. Although retired from Laurentian University, he still teaches one environment-related course per term for the university and two courses he designed for economic development officers in Northern Ontario through the Northern Policy Institute.

David also conducts research on the financialization of the housing market with his daughter Kirsten, who is Managing Director at the Waterloo Institute for Complexity and has been a Green Party candidate.

For David, climate change is the elephant in the room that no other party can address. “When we deal with transient top-of-mind issues, even Trump’s tariffs, we have to make sure that our solutions bend toward climate adaptation. Short-run panic will waste time and undermine our children’s future.
