Biographie
Walter is a PhD candidate and dedicated advocate committed to elevating voices and fostering inclusivity. Born and raised in Guatemala, of Afro-Indigenous descent, during a tumultuous civil war, he experienced firsthand the profound impacts of conflict and displacement. The early loss of a brother and the strife within his homeland instilled a deep-rooted commitment to justice and human rights.
To ensure his safety amidst the unrest, Walter's parents made the courageous decision to send him to North America, and traveling through the US to Canada at a young age. Arriving as a refugee claimant, he navigated the challenges of a new country while living with a learning disability. Despite facing homelessness and hardship on the very streets of Ontario, the generosity and solidarity of the local community became a source of hope and resilience.
Proud of his Afro-Indigenous heritage, Walter has a profound understanding of the unique challenges and rich cultural contributions of Indigenous communities. This perspective fuels his dedication to advocating for Indigenous rights and fostering meaningful partnerships within these communities.
Over a decade of public service within the Canadian federal government has allowed Walter to contribute meaningfully to policy and community development. Recognizing the power of storytelling, he founded the YouTube channel "Democracy Matters," producing stories and mini-documentaries that highlight learning disabilities, mental health, and the fundamental value of democracy. The channel's global reach—with nearly half a million views and over 2,000 subscribers—underscores the resonance of these vital conversations.
Academically, Walter has consistently demonstrated excellence. Graduating at the top of his class with an MBA and earning the honor of salutatorian, he continues to pursue higher education as a PhD candidate. Prestigious accolades like the British Columbia Provincial Graduate Scholarship and the International Student of Global Impact award recognize his commitment to academic achievement and societal impact. A scholarship bearing his name was given to an international student in need in 2023, reflecting a heartfelt commitment to giving back.
In 2020, Walter had the honour of representing Canada and Cape Breton University at the Model United Nations in Washington, D.C., receiving personal mentorship from the Estonian Ambassador. These experiences broadened his global perspective and reinforced a dedication to fostering international dialogue and understanding.
Motivated by personal experiences and a passion for advocacy, Walter is running for Parliament to be a voice for the unheard, all voices, including Indigenous and marginalized communities. He is committed to addressing critical issues like healthcare accessibility, support for individuals with disabilities. Inspired by his father's teachings as a hero who risked his life in the labour Unions of Guatemala fighting(peacefully) for Democracy, and leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., he believes that standing against injustice is imperative, especially when it matters most.
Walter envisions an Ontario where Healthcare is readily accessible to all in a fast but medically sound manner(His PhD focuses on Healthcare Access), opportunities are equitable, and the most vulnerable are empowered. With unwavering determination he aims to contribute to building a brighter, more compassionate future for all.
