Andrew Jakubelt

Indépendant pour Penticton Conseil
Community Safety, Fiscal Responsibility, and Vibrant community are what drives me and my platform. We need Experienced Leadership to rebuild a Safe and Vibrant Penticton.

Climate Change

Green Space

need more trees planted along boulevards in neighborhoods and should be mandatory in new development proposals.

Zoning

need to create more infill opporunity within the core and at city nodes (downtown, shopping center, north entrance).

Housing & Homelessness

Affordability

People need to shift their mindset away from needing massive 4000+sqft homes and live on a smaller footprint.
We live in a desirable area so housing prices here will probably stay realatively high...until more inventory is created.
New (large scale) developments need to have a certain percentage of the project devoted to smaller units/affordable units.

Property Taxes

Protective services is over half of the budget now and there are more calls to increase it; which most people would support
Amongst all of the cities up and down the valley Penticton's rates are actully lower than most.
Fiscal responsibility is one of my main platform ideologies.

Zoning

need to create more infill opporunity within the core and at city nodes (downtown, shopping center, north entrance).

Human Rights

Physical Accessibility

Still lots of city infrastructure that needs improvement...needs a higher priority on annual work plan than it currently has.
There have been 2 studies and plans created to address accessibility New subdivisions and downtown revitalization are good examples to start

Recent Immigrants

typically takes 10 years for an immigrant to become entrenched in a community...we need to work on lowering that number.
many of our parents or grand-parents originally immigrated to Canada, so we should empathize more with those wishing to start anew life here

Local Government & Democracy

Budgeting

as we ease into some sort of recession...City Hall needs to adjust (just like any other business if sales/revenue reduce)
current council did very little to push back/question staff on budget requests...seemed to rubber stamp whatever was put in front of them
need to address infrastructure defecit and chip away at dealing with rundown facilities and underground services.

Public Engagement

past council did a good job introducing engagement protocols and shapeyourcitypenticton.ca
current council didn't always utilize all of the information gathered from engagement.
hopefully with a new council in place people will be more enthusiastic to provide their input, concern, or solutions

Youth Engagement

more workshop/roundtable discussions with high school and college students would go a long way for council to hear youths concerns and ideas
we are building a future for the youth to inherit/take over, so why not involve them early.

Mental Health, Drugs, & Addiction

Mental Health Crisis Response

Institutions like "Riverview" need to be opened up again for those with severve mental health issues
Empathy amongst society regarding mental health becomes less and less which only compounds the problem.

Overdoses & the Contaminated Drug Supply

stiffer penalties for dealers of Fentanyl are needed.

Safe Supply

Synthetic drugs are cheaper to produce and easier for an addict to wean themselves off of.

Treatment Programmes

Treatment programs are essential and need more funding from Provincial government
people with severe addiction problems that have numerous contacts with police and health services...treatment should be mandatory.

Public Safety & Policing

Non-Police-Based Public Safety

Need to lobby Province and Federal Government to change cirminal code and sentencing mandates for prolific offenders

Police Funding

Council has been adding officiers...need to continue.
Car40 program (puts mental health nurse alongside police officier) would help with mental health related calls for service

Upstream Causes of Crime

opiod crisis not an easy fix, but more resources needed to address it.
prolific offenders need stiffer sentences...there often is little consequence to petty theft/crimes for those trying to feed their addiction

Fire Fighters and First Responders

Additional workload re: opiod crises needs to be addressed
Add 2 more fire fighters to keep each company closer to full strength and utilize reserve program more during peak holiday coverage times

Public Spaces & Services

Fitness & Sports Facilities

need to adjust/build to growing trends (ie. pickle ball). Happy to see indoor baseball facility coming to town!
should have some more outdoor fitness stations at different parks.
if memorial can't be used for ice at some point...the building should become a dry floor surface for lacross, pickle ball, others...

Green Space

need more trees planted along boulevards in neighborhoods and should be mandatory in new development proposals.

Public Washrooms

Very much needed, but often get vandalized and damaged.

Sidewalks & Bike Paths

would like to see KVR trail resurfaced from Penticton to Summerland (should have used the bike lane project funding for it).

Zoning

need to create more infill opporunity within the core and at city nodes (downtown, shopping center, north entrance).

Transit & Getting Around

Sidewalks & Bike Paths

would like to see KVR trail resurfaced from Penticton to Summerland (should have used the bike lane project funding for it).

Raison de la candidature

Up until last years by-election...there was only 1 member of council that was under the age of 60...that is not a good reflection or representation of the community. We need Experienced Leadership to rebuild a Safe and Vibrant Penticton.

I've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly during my tenure at City Hall and being away from politics this past 4 years has given me opportunity to reflect on what I've learned and/or could have done differently. I also don't agree with some of the decisions current council has made; which is why I've put my name forward.
