Indépendant pour New Westminster Maire

Climate Change

Active Transportation

One of the greatest risks to our planet and our economies

Zoning

A balanced mix of housing creates a complete community.

A mix of owner and renter opportunities need to continue to be developed so that more options are available. Tree canopy loss is critical and needs to be addressed in new development.

Housing & Homelessness

Affordability

Affordable housing is an important part of a strong local economy.

Indigenous-Led Housing

Our Indigenous population is overly represented in homelessness

We need to build more Indigenous centric housing. 70% of Indigenous Peoples live off reserve and require housing and employment opportunities.

Property Taxes

Cities need to become more efficient.

Property taxes on top of higher mortgage costs make home ownership and home retention difficult. Small businesses and renters also feel these effects.

Public Housing

More public housing is a must.

Canada eliminate the public housing strategy many years ago so provinces stopped funding the partnership as well. Now, in BC we're trying to catch up but it's a difficult task.

Rent

More affordable rental opportunities need to be developed.

Rent increases may be regulated, but once a tenant leaves, market rents are charged. More rental stock would ease this and create a more tenant friendly market.

SROs

Some SRO's lack safety and dignity.

Whereas being out of the elements may be desired, unmanaged SRO's can be a dangerous environment. Retrofitted and managed with full health care services will provide a positive solution.

Unhoused People

We should be judged on how we treat our most vulnerable.

Severe mental illness is the primary cause of homelessness. Housing and professional services is the only dignified solution.
