A Richmond resident since 1975, Eric has been active in the community, including being a voting member of the Insurance council of BC and a Richmond school trustee from 2011-2018. Eric has a B.Sc and a Ph.D and is currently a staff scientist at the BC Cancer Agency.

Eric Yung has resided in Richmond since 1975 and attended Richmond’s public schools from elementary through secondary. Along with his wife Grace, Eric is raising their two children, Megan and Evan, in Richmond.

Eric has been active in many community organizations including the International Development Assistance Society of Canada (IDAS), For Children We Care Fundraising Committee for the Children’s Hospital, and is a past voting member and Chair of the Insurance Council of BC.

From 2008-2011, Eric was President of the Richmond District Parents’ Association and in 2011 and 2014 he was elected as a School Board Trustee. In that role, Eric has chaired the Education Committee, Policy Committee and the Personnel & Finance Committee. He also served as the District representative to the City’s Sister City Advisory Committee and BC School Trustees Association. Eric chaired the Richmond Board of Education in 2015 and 2018.

Eric holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from UBC, and a Ph.D in Molecular Genetics from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. After receiving his doctorate, he continued his research at Harvard University in Boston where he worked in cutting-edge gene therapy research. Eric is currently employed at the Genome Sciences Centre at the BC Cancer Research Centre trying to motivate patients’ immune systems to attack various forms of cancer, known as immunotherapy.

After witnessing many of his friends move away from the City they grew up in due to rising housing costs, Eric feels passionately that people should be able to age in the place they choose to live. He wants to see a variety of purpose-built housing options that support all ages and stages of life. He recognizes that there are no quick fixes to the housing issues we face, but wants to actively work on the pieces the City can get moving now to ensure a vibrant and diverse Richmond.

He also believes that Richmond faces critical environmental challenges ahead, and while the City has done fantastic work upgrading the dyking system, much more can be done. His scientific background motivates him to look at the data available and use it to find immediate solutions that will address threats to Richmond’s infrastructure and unique situation as an urban island.

Eric also feels strongly about fiscal responsibility and wants our City Council to prioritize the infrastructure, policing, and improvement projects that benefit the majority of our tax-paying residents. If elected, Eric wants to see more productive dialogue with the community to help drive user-informed solutions for the future.

Raison de la candidature

Housing affordability has caused many families to move away from Richmond, which caused declining enrolment in our schools while I served as a school trustee. I want everyone to sustainably find homes in Richmond to live, grow their families, and age in our community. I want to work to provide a variety of purpose-built housing options that support all ages and stages of life.
