Melinda Slater

Indépendant pour West Vancouver Conseil
I will bring evidence, transparency and residents’ voices to Council decisions; protect West Vancouver’s character and quality of life; maintain core services and infrastructure before expanding; and demand clear costs, trade-offs and accountability for every tax dollar.

Third-generation West Vancouverite with a long record of community involvement. For 15 years I've studied District reports, addressed Council, and advocated for better decisions. More than campaign promises, I offer a civic record residents can review and judge for themselves.

Fifteen years ago, my concerns about the Grosvenor redevelopment in Ambleside turned me into a community advocate.

Like many residents, I supported redeveloping the 1300 block of Marine Drive. However, I believed the proposed height and density did not fit the scale of Ambleside Village and threatened its character. I participated in public consultations believing residents could help shape a better outcome. Instead, I came away concerned by a process that felt divisive and left many residents feeling unheard.

Concern about that major waterfront development led to a broader interest in how West Vancouver Council makes decisions – and how well those decisions reflect the interests and priorities of residents.

Since then, I have consistently advocated for greater transparency, meaningful public engagement, and resident-informed planning that respects our community’s unique character, livability and long-term sustainability.

On Council, I will insist that key questions are answered before major commitments are made: What problem are we solving? Will this protect or improve residents’ quality of life? What alternatives were considered? Who pays? Will this leave West Vancouver better off?

Better decisions start with better questions.

After 15 years of doing the work of an engaged citizen, I’m running to bring an informed, independent resident’s perspective to Council. Our community deserves a Council that welcomes scrutiny, listens to residents, and makes decisions based on evidence rather than assumptions.
