JORDAN WEAVER BIO

Jordan Weaver’s life has been a rich tapestry.

She was born in 1965 and spent her earliest years in Sooke before moving to Fairfield, Victoria, where she spent her childhood. She studied at Sir James Douglas Elementary, Central Junior High and Esquimalt High School before moving away in 1981.

For 44 years, she remained in touch with friends and family in Victoria as she continued her studies at UBC and the University of Toronto. After obtaining a Ph.D. in Modern Languages, she moved to Europe and began her career as an academic and translator. She is the author of a best-selling history of the city of Naples in Italy (In the Shadow of Vesuvius) and has published articles on faith and history in both Catholic and Jewish newspapers in the UK. Jordan taught translation at City University in London, England and worked as a translator and interpreter (French/Italian/Spanish) for banks and law firms in the City of London, all levels of the UK courts as well as several embassies and consulates. During over 25 years in England, her interests encompassed culture, education, faith and community relations. She was a member of the board of trustees of the British Italian Society (promoting friendship and respect between the UK and Italy) and chair of the board of trustees of the Terra Sancta Education Trust, a UK registered charity which provided scholarships and bursaries for Christian children in the Holy Land (Israel, Palestine and Jordan), for which she was named Britian’s “Catholic Woman of the Year” in 2011. From her time in London, Jordan retains gratitude for having met so many people of different backgrounds and perspectives.

After moving to Cuba from 2012-2014, Jordan was deeply touched by the rich culture and incredible resilience of the Cuban people. On her return to the UK, she volunteered as a “community champion” with the Sussex Afro-Caribbean Circle for many years, supporting newcomers in her local area. She continues to support Cuban children with cultural and charitable initiatives, such as publication of the children’s book I Live in Havana/Yo Vivo en La Habana and benefit concerts organised with Saanich musician Adonis Puentes.

An engaged humanitarian, she realised that she could do more for others by training as a solicitor and decided to change careers during the pandemic. However, just as she was about to qualify, life took a difficult turn as she was diagnosed with leukaemia in the same month as she suddenly lost her father. Jordan moved back to Canada to care for her widowed mother in Vancouver and begin cancer treatment, which was eventually successful. Having reconnected with a childhood friend who was a pallbearer for her father’s burial at Ross Bay Cemetery, life took another unexpected turn and she moved back to the island, settling in Gordon Head with her husband, Andrew, in 2025. The newlyweds have known each other since Jordan was four years old as their parents were close friends.

Jordan hopes to use her legal training to assist the vulnerable in the next stage of her career and to this end she has been an active volunteer since her marriage. She is a lector and member of the parish council at Holy Cross Catholic Parish in Gordon Head and has received leadership training with the Catholic Women’s League of Canada at St. Paul’s University in Ottawa. Jordan has received a scholarship from the Catholic Diocese of Victoria to study Pastoral Theology at Saint Mark’s College at UBC (part time on line) in order to improve her listening skills and provide even more attentive service to others. Jordan also volunteers in the area of crime prevention with both Saanich Police and the John Howard Society of Victoria, where she is a mentor on the CAMS programme.

Jordan has a long history in Victoria, yet she is a newcomer to Saanich. She understands the concerns of residents from many different backgrounds within our community and wants Saanich to be a place of welcome where everyone feels heard. Her experience as a community leader and charity trustee, as well as her legal training, demonstrates that she has the skills to participate well in council and work with everyone. She is running as an independent.

Raison de la candidature

I hope to serve Saanich with careful listening and evidence-based decision making. My commitment to our community has been demonstrated by my active volunteer engagement and detailed blog posts on issues of local concern: www.jordanweaver.ca

In my view, the three most important issues are to PROTECT what makes Saanich special, PLAN housing and infrastructure together and PROGRESS responsibly, which means listening to the concerns of local residents on topics such as affordability, transportation and ecological responsibility.
