Mental Health, Drugs, & Addiction

Mental Health in Schools

The Cowichan District has invested heavily in mental health in schools for students and staff and I will continue to keep this area as a priority.

Public Safety & Policing

Police in Schools

Our district has a strong and collaborative relationship with RCMP and liaison officers. I do not anticipate this changing

Reconciliation & Indigenous Nations

Indigenous Schooling

Working closely with nations and staff with local education agreements, enhanced literacy and numeracy programs are showing great progress. I am committed all efforts to continue growth in this area.

Schools & Public Education

After-School Programs

To continue to grow child care and before and after school care programs that provide a seamless transition from before school to entering kindergarten and for families to have quality, affordable care.

Artificial Intelligence in Schools

To work with our district to ensure that artificial intelligence is understood and planned for the safe use by students as the technology becomes more available. Putting a pause until such a time as it is safe.

Bullying & Bigotry

I stand by the Community of Care Pledge and condemn hate in all of its forms. Schools need to be safe and welcoming for all.

Childcare

As the current chair of the early learning and child care committee I remain committed to the growth of child care across our district.

Indigenous Schooling

Working closely with nations and staff with local education agreements, enhanced literacy and numeracy programs are showing great progress. I am committed all efforts to continue growth in this area.

Media Literacy & Critical Thinking

Ensuring that teachers and students have access to the resources required to enhance media literacy and critical thinking is one of many areas where thoughtful budgeting and planning are critical.

Neurodivergent Students & Support

All students with diverse abilities have the right to a full and enriching education experience. Again advocating for resources wherever possible remains a priority

Police in Schools

Our district has a strong and collaborative relationship with RCMP and liaison officers. I do not anticipate this changing

Student Involvement & Engagement

Every opportunity for the voice of students will be provided such as climate action committee, District Student Advisory Committee, District Scholarships and many more.

Traffic Safety Around Schools

Student safety in getting to and from school is a responsibility that belongs to everyone- Parents, schools and administrators. Awareness of high risk areas allow for risk mitigation.

As a longstanding leader engaged in supporting children youth and families for more than 3 decades and an incumbent trustee seeking re election I have the proven skillsets for the kind of leadership required to undertake this important role.

I have learned what strong governance looks like and the complexities to operating a school district with over 8000 students, 1200 staff, a transportation system and dozens of educational buildings. Managing an operational budget of over 130 million dollars takes focus, understanding the needs of students and staff and the policies that guide oversight. Working in the community I am also engaged in leading the Cowichan Youth @ Home Collective that has resulted in a new youth shelter, supported housing for youth and enhancements in services and programs in our region. The combination of my school district role and community role provide me with the connections and insights to best meet the needs of children and youth .
