I’m Roman Nurpeissov. I’m a father of two West Vancouver public school students, a lawyer with over 20 years’ experience, a former university law professor and a former Irwin Park DPAC rep. I bring a parent’s perspective and practical skills in governance, finance and contracts.

Being a parent makes education personal. I want my children—and every student in our district—to develop solid knowledge, think independently and creatively, and have the confidence to pursue their interests. My involvement in our school community has included serving on Irwin Park Elementary’s Parent Advisory Council and representing the school at the District Parent Advisory Council. That experience reinforced my belief that families have valuable perspectives to contribute and deserve meaningful two-way communication with their school district.

Over more than 20 years in law, I have worked at Canadian and international law firms, held in-house leadership roles and advised organizations on complex transactions and disputes. I now run my own law practice in West Vancouver, focusing on construction law, business law and litigation.

My work requires me to examine financial commitments, assess risks, scrutinize contracts and find practical solutions when people disagree. Those skills are directly relevant to reviewing school budgets, policies and facilities proposals. Just as importantly, my experience has taught me to prepare thoroughly, listen carefully and ask difficult questions respectfully.

I hold a Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan and a Master of Laws from Vanderbilt University, and I am admitted to practise law in the Province of British Columbia, the State of New York and the Republic of Kazakhstan. For five years, I taught law part-time at KIMEP University. Teaching gave me an appreciation of the preparation, patience and clear communication needed to help students understand challenging material.

I also advise Enya Learning, a local startup developing personalized English-literacy tools, as its Partnerships and Legal Affairs Advisor. This work has deepened my interest in helping students with different linguistic backgrounds access learning. I believe educational technology should be evaluated on its learning benefits, protection of student privacy and support for educators’ professional judgment.

Outside work, I enjoy writing, martial arts and travel. I have published a short novel and participated in theatre festivals. These days, family life also includes plenty of time driving my sons to their activities—a familiar role for many parents.

I am running for school trustee to contribute a strong parental voice, independent judgment and responsible financial oversight. My commitment is to students and families across West Vancouver, Bowen Island and Lions Bay: strong learning, supported students and a school board that listens and explains its decisions clearly.
